Protesters camped outside the prime minister’s office were attacked by government supporters.

It caused police to enforce an indefinite curfew in Colombo.

Several hundred supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa gathered at his office on Monday following speculations that he may resign to relieve pressure on his younger brother, President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“Whose power? Mahinda’s power!” the crowd shouted.

After the meeting, the government supporters went out to where protesters have been demonstrating for several days in front of the office.

Government supporters went out to the protesters who had been demonstrating in front of the office for several days.

They were seen beating demonstrators with clubs, smashing and then burning down their tents, according to local television station Sirasa.

Officials said at least 20 people were hurt.

Since April 9, Rajapaksa supporters armed with sticks and clubs have attacked defenseless demonstrators camped outside the president’s office.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse government supporters who broke through police lines to destroy anti-government protestors’ tents and other structures.

The attack on protestors came just one day after Mahinda Rajapaksa was heckled during his first public appearance since the mass uprising began.

On Sunday, the prime minister paid a visit to one of Anuradhapura’s holiest Buddhist temples.

Hundreds of protesters held hand-written posters and chanted slogans demanding that “thieves” be banned from the hallowed city.
