Egypt to relax COVID-19 restrictions on mosques and shrines

Egypt to relax COVID-19 restrictions on mosques and shrines

The Minister of Endowments of Egypt, Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa, has declared the reopening of mosques around the country.

He stated that a decision was made today to reopen mosques, restart teachings and Qur’anic reciters, and allow visitors to shrines outside of prayer hours.

However, the government will continue to prohibit individuals from remaining in seclusion for lengthy periods of time in a mosque, as decided by a commission handling the epidemics and health pandemics problem. This is due to certain people’s lack of dedication to preventative measures.

According to Gomaa, it was also agreed to keep the Imam Hussein Mosque square open throughout the day, in line with planned instructions that the ministry would provide.

The Minister of Endowments urged worshipers and mosque-goers to continue to take cautious precautions, the most important of which is social separation, and to wear a face mask, adding that the Friday sermon will remain 10 minutes long.

Egypt implemented stringent prophylactic measures roughly two years ago, when the coronavirus began to spread. It has increasingly loosened these restrictions, although it has prohibited the opening of mosques outside of prayer times and has emphasized social distance.

The Egyptian government declared in March that coronavirus restrictions will be relaxed. It agreed to enable the opening of mosque-related activities and to hold afternoon teachings and Tarawih prayers at major mosques throughout Ramadan.

The ministry has decided to open all large and university mosques where Friday prayers are conducted and imams are linked with ministry activity.

The severity of coronavirus infections in Egypt decreased when vaccination rates increased. According to the Ministry of Health, the average daily number of infections is 46, with 5 fatalities.
