Russia kicked out of the International Gas Union

The International Gas Union (IGU), whose members for Russia included Gazprom and Novatek, has ceased all Russian participation in its activities.

According to a Ukrinform correspondent, Interfax made the relevant comment in reference to delegates of the World Gas Congress (WGC).

As a result, the Korea Gas Union, which is organising the WGC 2022, will be unable to engage further Russian organisations in the WGC 2022 for speaking, delegation participation, exhibition participation, or sponsorship.

Gazprom and Novatek, two of Russia’s main gas market companies, have previously competed in the WGC. Alexey Miller and Leonid Mikhelson, its leaders, were set to appear at the conference in South Korea.

Gazprom planned to spend RUB 137 million to establish an exhibition stand in Daegu, South Korea, according to corporate statistics. Novatek also intended to construct its own display stand.

The IGU is made up of 160 gas industry associations and enterprises that account for over 95% of the global gas market.

A reminder that Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, triggering a war. Russian troops are shelling and destroying critical infrastructure, unleashing missile and air strikes on Ukrainian cities and villages, torturing and killing civilians.
