BUCHAREST, Romania (Reuters) – Jill Biden heard tragic stories from Ukrainian women and children who left Russia’s war and sought safety across the border in Romania on Saturday, and she complimented the Romanian government and relief agencies for the wide variety of humanitarian aid they are providing to refugees.

Biden witnessed firsthand the humanitarian efforts to aid some of the 900,000 Ukrainians who have fled to Romania since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 at a Romanian public school hosting refugee pupils.

The majority of those Ukrainians have fled to neighbouring countries, but a significant number — mostly women and children — have remained while the war continues.

After visiting classrooms with children aged 5 to 15, Biden told moms of some of the youngsters, “We stand with you.”
