Sergio Garcia requests permission to compete in Greg Norman LIV Golf event

According to sources, Sergio Garcia has asked to be released in order to compete in Greg Norman’s Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational series opener in June.

The Spaniard has asked the PGA Tour for a waiver to compete in the $25 million (£20 million) event in Centurion, near London.

Garcia hinted to his participation in the Wells Fargo Championship on Thursday during play.

“I can’t wait to get off this tour,” he stated after a contentious verdict went against him, which was eventually overturned.

“My friend, I can’t wait to get out of here. I won’t have to deal with you for another couple of weeks.”
Garcia was forced to take a penalty drop after a rules referee determined that he had over the three-minute time limit for finding his ball.

Garcia’s judgement was eventually overturned because it failed to account for the time he spent crossing a brook in search of his ball.

The 42-year-par old’s on the 10th hole, however, could not be amended because he had already signed his scorecard before the subsequent judgement.

Lee Westwood and Richard Bland, who both missed the halfway cut at the DP World Tour’s British Masters at The Belfry this week, have already stated that they have requested to be freed in order to compete in the first LIV Golf event, which will be held in Hertfordshire from June 9-11.

PGA Tour has also granted permission to Americans Phil Mickelson and Robert Garrigus to compete in the tournament.

Defectors to the breakaway effort, which will include eight 54-hole events across Europe, the United States, and Asia, have previously faced lifetime bans from the PGA and European-based DP World Tours.

The LIV Golf International Series is thought to be the forerunner of the projected breakaway Super League.

Norman has scrapped plans to host the series as a league, opting instead for an invitational tournament structure until 2024.
