Ukraine’s finance minister called for a complete ban on Russian oil and gas imports

Serhiy Marchenko, Ukraine’s finance minister, called for a comprehensive worldwide embargo on Russian oil and gas on Friday in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Marchenko claimed in an online briefing that Ukraine was struggling to balance its budget after ten weeks of fighting and that he could not be satisfied with the speed with which financial aid was flowing from outside as finance minister.

He said the high price of oil and natural gas meant Moscow had a budget surplus and “they feel quite comfortable,” referring to the “inadequacy of the sanctions that have been imposed.”

“The fundamental problem is a complete ban on gas and oil purchases from the Russian Federation. This is something that needs to be addressed, and the Ukrainian authorities are doing just that “he stated “By doing so, the prospect of financing the war will be eliminated.”

Economic sanctions imposed by the US and its European allies have hampered Russia’s $1.8 trillion economy, while billions of dollars in military aid have assisted Ukraine in repelling the invasion.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, however, stated on Friday that his country could not accept the European Union’s planned new sanctions package, which includes an oil embargo.
