Guinea junta to prosecute former president for murder

The authorities in Guinea said they would charge former President Alpha Condé with murder and other crimes committed during his presidency.

Mr. Condé, 84, was deposed in a military coup in September.

According to a document from Guinea’s public prosecutor, he is one of 27 former top officials accused of a slew of offenses.

Murder, unlawful detentions, abductions, torture, rape, and kidnapping are among them.

The claims appear to be about the closing months of Mr. Condé’s presidency when the security forces were employed to squash resistance to his third term.

Dozens of people were killed because they took to the streets.

The public prosecutor, who was chosen by Guinea’s military authorities, stated that the prosecution was opened in response to a complaint made by the FNDC, an umbrella organization that led the demonstrations.
