A 44-year-old Michigan woman was shopping in a convenience store when a ruby red ticket with sparkly letters caught her eye.

The $20 ticket reads “$2,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular!” — and provides a chance to win up to $2 million. “I liked the color and design, so I decided to give it a try,” she said in a May 3 news release from Michigan Lottery.

That offhand purchase was worth millions. “When I scratched the ticket and saw I’d won $2 million, I had to do a double take because I thought I was reading it wrong,” she said. “When it finally sunk in that I’d won, I was very excited!” She recently claimed her prize, and she was given the choice between a one-time payment of about $1.2 million or 30 annual payments equal to $2 million.

Lottery officials say the woman, who chose to remain anonymous, picked the $1.2 million lump sum.

She plans to use her winnings to pay bills before saving the rest, according to the news release. The ticket was purchased at Kelsey’s Market in Warren, about 20 miles north of Detroit.
