Wind-whipped flames raged through pine-covered mountainsides in New Mexico on Monday, forcing inhabitants to from their homes and forcing the state’s psychiatric institution to evacuate.
Hundreds of homes in a historic city in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains were ordered to evacuate immediately as a massive wildfire raged on the outskirts of town, fueled by strong winds and bone-dry conditions.
According to US Forest Service authorities in New Mexico, the Calf Canyon Wildfire has charred more than 41,682 hectares (102,998 acres), or more than half the area of New York City, as of Monday morning.
As on Monday, it was 30 percent contained as it burnt drought-stricken vegetation northwest of Las Vegas, which has a population of 13,000 people.
“With skeleton personnel, we’re attempting to house and feed people.” Hundreds of individuals have been displaced from their houses. “It’s a terrible tragedy,” said Allen Affeldt, a hotel owner in Las Vegas.
The fire, which is now the largest active wildfire in the United States, is one of a dozen blazes raging throughout the southwest. Wildfires are becoming more common and arriving earlier this year as a result of climate change, according to scientists.
Over 3,100 wildland firefighters and support staff were battling flames throughout the country, with approximately a third of them attempting to contain the massive inferno in New Mexico.
“It’s quite smoky out here.” In an interview with the Reuters news agency, Jesus Romero, the deputy county manager of San Miguel County, said there was “a lot of smoke and falling ash.”

Due to the fast-moving fire, state health officials said they began evacuating all 197 patients at the Behavioral Health Institute.
Patients were being moved to various clinics around the state, some in protected vehicles and others accompanied by police.
Several hundred houses in Las Vegas’ northern corner were urged to evacuate immediately on Monday morning, according to a notice issued by San Miguel County.
The county stated, “This unfolding scenario is extremely critical, and refusing to leave might be a catastrophic decision.”
According to Romero, another 4,000 to 5,000 individuals have been warned to prepare to evacuate immediately.
To safeguard ranches, rural cottages, and the United World College, crews bulldozed fire breaks to the north and west of the ancient university town.
