President of Tunisia, Kas Saed, has announced plans to amend the country’s constitution.

Mr. Saed, who has dissolved government and parliament, said in a televised Eid speech that a committee will be formed to redraft the present structure and that its work would be completed within days.

He did not say how the constitution will be amended, but he did say it would usher in a “New Republic.”

Since assuming office nine months ago, opponents have accused him of attempting to consolidate all levers of power in his own hands.
