Russian shelling started on Sunday, according to a local official, delaying evacuation efforts from the beleaguered city.

Evacuation in Mariupol delayed

On Monday, efforts to evacuate more residents from Mariupol, Ukraine’s devastated port city, were hampered by delays, as hundreds of people remained trapped in the Azovstal steelworks, the final bastion of resistance to Russia’s siege.
It was unclear what was causing the delay right away. After a convoy of buses had left, Russian military resumed shelling the factory on Sunday, according to a local spokesman.

As the war enters its third month, the condition of people besieged in Mariupol; which was bombarded for weeks before Russian forces took control of the majority of the city, has become a source of humanitarian concern.

Since the beginning of the war, the city has been under siege; trapping inhabitants with limited access to food, water, medication, and electricity.
Up to 100,000 people may still be in Mariupol; including 2,000 Ukrainian fighters stationed beneath the Soviet-era steel plant; which is the only area of the city not under Russian control.
