Families who have been displaced have been sleeping in tents; with critics claiming that the government has failed to deliver on promised relief.

Hundreds of people are still homeless in this remote forest region 1,200 kilometres north of Peru’s capital; after a massive earthquake in November produced landslides and flooding. Communities living along the raging Utcubamba and Maranon rivers lost everything, including their houses, livelihoods, schools, and health clinics.
This area was part of Pedro Castillo’s rural political stronghold during last year’s elections. Castillo is a Marxist politician who took office in July. However, many people today blame Castillo’s government for their current position.
