According to a media lawyer, Meghan Markle’s lucrative arrangement with Spotify would come with conditions.
In a recent interview with Express.co.uk, Ian Penman acknowledged that he believes the platform has a clause that allows it to ‘cancel the contract’ if things do not go as planned.
“It becomes intriguing because there may be dependent terms that allow [Spotify] to pull out of the arrangement under specific circumstances – so she might put anything in the podcast,” he says.
“Who, for instance, has editorial control?” Is it true that she merely says what she wants?
“Does she state what she wants, then they modify it and determine whether they’re satisfied?”
“Don’t forget that Spotify had major issues with Joe Rogan’s programme, in which he featured people who made remarks questioning vaccination efficacy.
“So they could have been a little burned by it, which I assume they did, and they’ll probably want a little more editorial control over these podcasts to make sure nothing gets out that offends their database, let alone their user base.”
“Spotify’s fingers were undoubtedly burned by it, and they want a little more editorial control.”
“They probably don’t want [Meghan] expressing everything she wants since it would alienate a lot of their clients and consumers.”
“They’re probably thinking, ‘Let’s not broadcast something that would generate turmoil because it will have a negative impact on the stock price, which is awful.'”
Mr Penman said that if “people aren’t genuinely interested in what she has to say,” Spotify may be able to terminate Meghan’s contract.
