Jessica Watkins is the first African-American woman to join the International Space Station crew.

According to Space, NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins made history by becoming the first black woman to serve on an International Space Station crew.

Watkins and NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, the mission’s commander, and Robert Hines, as well as European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, launched to the station on April 7th. Watkins is a member of the Crew-4 mission of SpaceX.

“I think it’s essential to recognise this as a milestone for our agency and for our country,” Watkins said earlier this year, “to know that we’re building on the foundation set by the black lady astronauts who’ve come before me.”

Her next destination could be the moon, as NASA’s Artemis programme aims to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo mission in 1972.

Watkin is eligible for selection because she is a member of the team.
