POLAND SAYS COUNTRIES PAYING IN RUBLES FOR RUSSIAN GAS SHOULD BE FINED.

Following Moscow’s decision to shut off supplies to Poland and Bulgaria for refusing to do so, Poland’s climate minister said the European Union should penalise nations that use roubles to pay for Russian gas.

EU member states appear to be at odds on how to keep paying for gas without violating European sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Many European countries continue to rely largely on Russian energy imports.

Poland, one of the EU’s most ardent supporters of punishing sanctions against Russia, believes the bloc to prohibit all purchases of Russian gas.

“Today, what is missing are full gas sanctions, which would solve the problem with Gazprom and the problem of 100% compliance with sanctions. “We expect these sanctions,” Anna Moskwa said late Wednesday on private network Polsat News.

Austria, Germany, and Hungary are the primary EU member states opposing stronger gas sanctions against Russia, she added.

“We anticipate that these countries (that pay in roubles) will face penalties and, as a result, will stop paying in roubles.”

She didn’t say what kind of repercussions Poland wished to see.

Russia’s new gas payment method, which entails opening accounts at Gazprombank and converting payments in euros or dollars to roubles, provides wriggle room for certain countries to continue buying Russian gas.

Uniper (UN01.DE), a German power utility, told the Rheinische Post on Thursday that it would transfer payments for Russian gas to a Russian bank rather than a European bank.
