Four months after a training crash, Dutch cyclist Amy Pieters has regained consciousness and can “talk slightly non-verbally.”

Pieters, 30, suffered severe brain damage in December when he fell during a training camp in Alicante.

She was placed in an induced coma and moved to a Netherlands hospital in January after undergoing surgery.

Pieters’ condition has improved, according to her squad SD Worx, but her long-term outlook is unknown.

“Amy recognizes individuals, understands what is being said, and is able to complete ever more tasks,” the team stated.

“As a result of the brain injury, doctors are unsure what lingering symptoms and remaining abilities Amy Pieters will have.”

Pieters had won the Madison global championship for the third year in a row, and she had also won stage two of the Women’s Tour in 2021, alongside Kirsten Wild.

Last year, she also won the Dutch national road race and the Belgian Nokere Koerse.
