Trevor Reed, a former US Marine, returned to the United States on Thursday, according to his spokeswoman, after being released by Russia in a prisoner swap that took place during the tensest bilateral ties in decades over the crisis in Ukraine.
Reed was released on Wednesday in exchange for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot.
According to US sources, the trade was not part of broader diplomatic talks and did not indicate a shift in American policy toward Ukraine. Following Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine and ensuing Western sanctions, Russian-American relations have deteriorated to their lowest point since the Cold War era.
Reed, a Texas native, was back in the nation, according to his spokeswoman, who did not specify where he entered the country.
His parents had previously stated that he would be transported to a military hospital for observation. The 30-year-old was in “excellent spirits,” according to senior US authorities.
President Joe Biden said in a statement before to Reed’s arrival, “Today, we welcome home Trevor Reed and celebrate his return to the family that has missed him profoundly.” Biden also mentioned the parents’ fears about their son’s health.
