The Conservative Party has called for an independent probe into allegations that a Tory MP watched porn on his phone while sitting next to a female minister in Parliament.
A minister brought up the issue during a meeting of Tory MPs on Tuesday. Another MP confirmed her story.
The party’s chief whip has now requested that the incident be forwarded to Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS).
“Upon the completion of any ICGS inquiry, the Chief Whip will take necessary action,” said a representative for Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris, who is in charge of Tory MPs’ discipline.
The ICGS is a parliamentary watchdog that was established in the aftermath of the Westminster bullying and harassment incident in 2017.
If a complaint is filed with the ICGS, it will be reviewed by an external, independent investigator who will determine if a full inquiry is warranted.
According to a Sunday Times story, 56 MPs, including three cabinet ministers, are facing sexual misconduct charges in Parliament, according to Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.
She questioned Prime Minister Boris Johnson about whether sexual misconduct was grounds for dismissal under the ministerial code.
Mr. Johnson replied that “sexual harassment is intolerable” and was “grounds for dismissal”.
