On Trump’s statements, Mexico’s president said: “Don’t vote for people who have abused them.”

“When someone goes too far and causes offence,” López Obrador told Latinos in the United States, “we’ll call them out so that our compatriots may support us.”

In reaction to a remark made by former US President Donald Trump, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador advised Latinos in the United States not to vote in November’s midterm elections for politicians who had “mistreated” them.

After threatening to levy tariffs on Mexican goods, Trump claimed at a rally in Ohio over the weekend that he had pushed López Obrador to deploy 28,000 soldiers to the US-Mexico border to keep migrants out.

When asked about Trump’s remarks, López Obrador stated that no American political party should “exploit Mexico as a piata,” and that individuals who have the right to vote should use it wisely.

“If Mexico or any country in Latin America and the Caribbean is mistreated, do not vote for those parties and candidates, whether they are from the Democratic or Republican party,” López Obrador told Americans of Mexican and Latino descent.

“When someone goes too far and offends others, we’ll call them out so that our fellow citizens may assist us.” “Because we’re 40 million people,” López Obrador explained. “Remember where you came from.”

According to a 2017 Pew Research Center research released before of the 2016 presidential election, Mexicans made up the biggest population of Hispanic origin in the United States, with 36.6 million.

During his campaign for the president in 2016, Trump aroused anger by referring to Mexican migrants as rapists and drug runners. In 2017, López Obrador, who was then in opposition, compared Trump’s handling of migrants to Nazi Germany’s treatment of Jews.
López Obrador praised Trump as president, saying on Monday that he “loved Trump even if he is a capitalist” and that his rule was beneficial to both countries.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, a leading contender to succeed Lopez Obrador in 2024, dismissed Trump’s remarks.

In response to Trump’s statements, Ebrard commented on Twitter, “What happened yesterday is a guy advocating for the anti-Mexicanism that characterises him.” “We’re patriots in this regime.” And we have no need to be embarrassed.”
