Hundreds of beds and mattresses purchased on short notice for a COVID field hospital will now be donated to Ukraine war refugees.
The Swansea Bay field hospital’s 500 vacant beds will be handed to disadvantaged people, including families.
The Swansea Bay health board has also stated that it will provide beds to persons who have signed up to host Ukrainian migrants.
According to one charity, the offer will help “keep refugee families together.”
Glyn and Jan Davies from Swansea’s Clydach have joined up and are awaiting a match with a Ukrainian family.
Previously constrained in what they could provide, Ms Davies said they now “don’t have to say no” to hosting a larger family after gaining a bed from the health board.
“Now we could have a family of three if necessary,” Glyn Davies explained, “whereas we would have asked a mother and a daughter to sleep in the same bed.”
In addition, the health board is collaborating with the local council and charity to offer beds for families that are experiencing “bed poverty.”
Thousands of people in Wales have signed up to host refugees escaping Ukraine’s war.
Swansea Bay University Health Board is providing beds to such families in order to make it easier for them to house Ukrainian migrants.
Vicky Martin, who set up the South Wales Sponsorship for Ukraine Facebook page said it was an “amazing opportunity” which would allow host families to “keep refugee families together”.
