World Champion Alaphilippe gravely hurt after accident

After colliding with a tree during Sunday’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege one-day race, world champion Julian Alaphilippe sustained two broken ribs, a shattered scapula, and a punctured lung.

According to his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team, the 29-year-old Frenchman’s condition is stable, although he has been placed in hospital for observation.

Many riders were knocked down by a massive collision 62 kilometers away, with Alaphilippe lying in a ditch and hitting a tree.

Remco Evenepoel, 22, took first place in the race.

It was a first Monument triumph for the Belgian, a Quick-Step teammate of Alaphilippe, who attacked 30 kilometers from the finish line and raced solo to a thrilling victory.

“It’s insane,” Evenepoel added. “It’s my first Liege, and I’ve won it.”

Quinten Hermans finished second in an all-Belgian podium, over a minute behind fellow cyclo-cross rider Wout van Aert.

On a fast, downhill portion of the race in the Ardennes woodland in Belgium, Britain’s Tom Pidcock, Ineos’ Olympic mountain biking champion, was one of the first to tumble, and roughly 30 riders in all fell.

After crashes at Strade Bianche in early March and La Fleche Brabanconne 10 days ago, double world champion Alaphilippe has already tumbled three times in races this season.

Ilan Van Wilder, a teammate, also suffered a broken jaw in the incident on Sunday.
