Republican congresswoman urges the United States to resume diplomatic efforts in Ukraine

Republican congresswoman urges the United States to resume diplomatic efforts in Ukraine

Rep. Victoria Spartz of Illinois, the first Ukrainian-born member of Congress, called for the US to resume diplomatic relations with Ukraine on Sunday.

She said that doing so would send “a strong message to the Ukrainian people.”

Many countries are returning to Kyiv to resume diplomatic activity.

The very least we can do is bring it to Lviv, if possible, Spartz told Dana Bash on CNN.

You take some risks in any career, whether it’s a political or diplomatic one.

You must be astute. But doing your service is also a component of your employment.

It’s also tough to execute your work if you’re not on the ground, she added.

“It’s important but it also sends a strong message for Ukrainian people,” she continued. “It’s important for them to see that support and it makes them stronger and they’re going to win (the war).”

In the days leading up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US and other countries withdrew their ambassadors and evacuated their embassies and consulates from Kyiv.

They relocated them to the western city of Lviv.

The State Department ceased all diplomatic functions in Lviv immediately before Russia’s invasion began, and those diplomats were quickly relocated to Poland, commuting into Lviv.

She said, “I think we can do it. We’re strong people, we’re a strong country. We definitely can arrange for our people to come here and visit Ukraine.”
