ICRC has demanded urgent access to Mariupol in order to ensure the safe transit of civilians and wounded

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has appealed for immediate and unimpeded access to Mariupol in order to allow civilians and wounded people to safely exit the city.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, the ICRC’s press service issued the relevant statement.

The assessment notes that “immediate and unhindered humanitarian access is urgently required to allow for the voluntary safe movement of thousands of people and hundreds of wounded out of the city, especially from the Azovstal plant area.”

The ICRC has been trying to reach residents in need in Mariupol and other cities where civilians are confined since the end of February.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has consistently advocated for the voluntary safe passage of civilians out of these areas and the entry of impartial humanitarian aid, requesting that the principle of humanity and international humanitarian law be respected.

“As a neutral and unbiased mediator, the ICRC stands ready to assist the conflicting parties in reaching practical and feasible agreements to ensure the voluntary evacuation of people in need.” “As soon as an agreement is reached and security guarantees are granted, teams will be in place to support safe passage operations,” the ICRC stated.

A reminder that the Azovstal plant in Mariupol is home to over 1,000 civilians and Ukrainian military, including about 500 injured. The Ukrainian side insists that Russia establish a humanitarian corridor as soon as possible.
