Canford Heath on fire; firefighters struggled due to strong winds

Firemen are struggling with a “critical” fire at a heathland in Dorset.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said it went to the episode at Canford Heath in Poole on Saturday evening after the fire was being “driven” by solid breezes.

Scenes via web-based entertainment showed enormous orange blazes covering a tremendous area of country land, with thick smoke filling the air.

Canford Heath is known for being the biggest heathland in Dorset, and the biggest swamp heath in the UK.

It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a piece of the Dorset Heathlands Special Protection Area.

Streets have been shut down around the area with fire groups and cops attempting to smother the blast.

The fire administration said on Twitter: “Tragically, we’re managing a critical fire on #CanfordHeath.

“Our firemen are striving to fix the fire as it’s being driven by the solid breezes. Kindly might all walkers, cyclists, and spectators at any point keep away from the heath.”

Dorset Police said: “Officials went to help the fire administration and guarantee the wellbeing of individuals from the general population.

“They left the scene at around 4.30 pm. Inquiries to lay out the reason for the fire are progressing.”

Elizabeth Leddy, 28, from Poole, told the PA news organization there were numerous fire motors at the scene, with streets close to her home cut off.

She added: “The blazes were near spreading to the trees on the side of the road at the crossing point of Canford Heath street and Sherborn Crescent, they looked huge.

“How much smoke pluming out resembled no Heath fire I’ve seen previously.”

Another close-by occupant said the “alarming” fire implied she was stuck on her street.
