EMMANUEL MACRON deployed hundreds of riot police to the streets on the eve of France’s presidential election, as angry demonstrators gathered.
Protesters descended on Paris ahead of Sunday’s presidential election clash between President Emmanuel Macron and his right-wing opponent Marine Le Pen. Riot police have been deployed in France’s capital city to keep order as demonstrators yell and wave banners expressing their dissatisfaction with President Macron’s performance in office.
While large crowds have marched through the heart of Paris, the protests have remained calm thus far.
Despite the non-violent nature of the demonstrations, a substantial number of police officers with batons and riot shields have been deployed to the streets.
This has been interpreted as a hint that President Macron is aware of the importance of “shut down” any possible incidents prior to their escalation.
A French journalist on the scene told “This is quite normal in France now. Every protest, however peaceful, becomes an operation contained for Macron.
“They always end with NAS police and a lot more police officers than protesters.
“After years of clashes in France, he just wants to shut it down before it even starts.
“Welcome to France!”
On Sunday, the French will vote on whether to re-elect centrist President Macron or far-right populist Marine Le Pen.
