Somalia: Attack near Mogadishu beach kills six

An emergency service spokesman confirmed that six persons were killed in a bomb at a beachside restaurant in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.

Security and government personnel frequented the Pescatore Seafood Restaurant, which opened recently on the city’s south side.

Smoke pouring from the scene of the incident is captured on video published to social media.

Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamist organization in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the bomb.

According to the Reuters news agency, the group’s military operations spokeswoman stated that they were targeting “security personnel and politicians of the apostate regime.”

Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, routinely targets Mogadishu as part of its struggle against the government.

According to Abdikadir Abdirahman, head of Aamin Ambulance Service, they “transported six deceased civilians and seven injured people.”

Numerous prominent individuals, including the Somali police commissioner, were reportedly there at the time, although there is no proof they were among the injured.

According to police officer Mohamed Ali, the police commissioner was safe, as were “many legislators who stayed there.”

This incident comes amid a recent spike in violence as lawmakers try to complete a long-delayed process of selecting a new parliament. Last week, lawmakers were sworn in, clearing the door for them to elect a new leader.

On 24 March, a female member of the Somali federal parliament was killed along with more than 30 others in two suicide attacks in central Somalia’s Beledweyne town.

And on 18 April, a mortar strike on Somalia’s parliament injured seven persons.
