Twitter on Friday banned ads that deny the reality of climate change.

An unwanted takeover bid by billionaire Elon Musk, who thinks people should be able to say pretty much whatever they want on the platform, prompted Twitter’s announcement on Earth Day.

“We prohibit misleading advertisements on Twitter that contradict scientific consensus on climate change, in accordance with our inappropriate content policy,” Twitter global sustainability manager Casey Junod wrote in a blog post.

“We believe that misrepresentative ads should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis.”

It also launched “hubs of credible, authoritative” information on a range of high-profile topics, including climate change science.

“Now more than ever, meaningful climate action, from all of us, is critical.”

Though access to Musk’s wealth may be enticing, Twitter does not want the billionaire known for firing off tweets without regard to consequences to rule over them.
