Lampard would take draw at Liverpool as Everton battle to survive

Everton manager Frank Lampard stated on Friday that despite his team’s dire need for points, he would gladly accept a draw against “great” Liverpool.

By the time Sunday’s game at Anfield kicks off, the Toffees, who have only six points on the road this season, maybe in the bottom three.

Everton are presently one spot above the relegation zone, with a single point separating them from 18th-placed Burnley, who have played one more game.

Despite the strain to avoid relegation for the first time since 1954, Lampard, who was appointed in late January, claimed he would be happy with a point at the home of Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple chasers.

“It is a tough game we are going into, make no bones about that,” he said.

“It is a team that has just put four past Manchester United. You have to respect them as a team. It is an incredible team, an incredible squad with options and an incredible manager.

“I am a realist. You understand the position we are in. The table is a reflection of where you are at.”

Due of coronavirus restrictions, Lampard’s last visit to Anfield as a manager was in 2020, when Chelsea lost 5-3 in front of an empty stadium.

The match was remembered for a touchline brawl between Lampard and Klopp, during which Lampard was heard yelling expletives at the Reds manager.

There were no lingering animosity between the two men, according to the former Chelsea manager.

When asked how he felt about going back with a full crowd, Lampard joked: “So nothing can be heard on the videos afterwards?

“I can’t preach staying on the right side of the line and then say it was fine for me to maybe get it wrong. All of us do.”

He added: “I have seen Jurgen since then when I was managing Chelsea and everything is fine.

“We understand the passionate nature of the game and that’s what I like — we can maybe get things wrong but we all move on because we understand what this game can do at times.”
