What a few weeks can do. Just last month, the West slammed India’s relations with Russia.
It wasn’t just that the South Asian country refused to denounce Moscow’s deadly assault on Ukraine; its purchases of discounted Russian oil, according to opponents, flew in the face of international sanctions intended at damaging the Kremlin’s coffers.
The White House was making its displeasure clear, calling New Delhi “somewhat shaky” and speaking of its “disappointment”.
Then the West’s tune shifted. This month, Biden met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and gushed over “deep connections between our people” and “common values.” Then on Friday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson travelled to Delhi to promote trade and pose for photos while ignoring “differences” with Russia.
Although India’s attitude on Ukraine remains unchanged. It’s still importing cheap Russian oil — nearly as much as it did in all of 2021, according to Reuters — and keeping silent about Moscow’s incursion. On April 7, it voted against suspending Russia from the Human Rights Council.
