After the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy planned to get former President Donald Trump to resign, The New York Times learned in an audio tape.
He told them he thought Congress would impeach Trump again, believing the measure would pass both the House and the Senate, according to the recording.
“I’m thinking about talking to him about it tonight,” McCarthy added. “Do you think, knowing him, he’d ever back down?”
If Bush did not quit, McCarthy said he would notify him of his intent to impeach him.
“I think this will pass, and I suggest you quit,” McCarthy added. “That’s my take, but I doubt he’d accept it.”
McCarthy denied having the chat, calling a New York Times report “completely inaccurate and incorrect.” The audio, which seems to back up the story, was eventually published by NYT journalists Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, authors of the 2020 election book This Will Not Pass.
