Afghanistan: IS blasts a Shi’ite mosque killing almost 31 people

According to local officials and journalists, dozens of people were killed or injured in four blasts across Afghanistan on Thursday.

In the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the first explosion ripped through a Shia mosque.

According to the BBC, at least 31 people were murdered and 87 more were injured.

The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Although the Taliban claim to have conquered the Islamic State, the group continues to pose a severe security threat to Afghanistan’s new leadership.

The IS militants claimed that the attack on the Mazar-i-Sharif mosque was carried out with a remotely detonated booby-trapped bag while the mosque was full with worshippers.

The incident was part of an ongoing global campaign to “avenge” the murders of the group’s former commander and spokesman, according to the group.

“Blood and terror are everywhere,” said Ahmad Zia Zindani, a spokesman for the provincial public health department.

He added that “people were shouting” while seeking news of their relatives at the local hospital.

IS has also claimed responsibility for another of Thursday’s strikes, in which a truck exploded outside a police station in Kunduz.

The explosion killed four people and injuring 18.

A Taliban vehicle was also hit by a roadside mine in eastern Nangarhar province, killing four Taliban members and wounded a fifth.

The killing on Thursday comes just days after two bomb attacks at Abdul Rahim Shahid high school in Kabul’s predominantly Shia district.

Officials say at least six people have died and more than 20 have been injured.
