President Joe Biden of the United States pledges an additional $800 million in security aid for Ukraine. Heavy artillery weapons, ammo, and tactical drones will be supplied “straight to the frontlines of liberation,” according to Biden.
Vladimir Putin has ordered his troops to avoid storming the Azovstal steel complex in Mariupol, where the last detachment of Ukrainian fighters is holding out.
Instead, the president urges them to close it up so that not even a “fly” can get out, and declares that Russia controls the key port city.
Some civilians who had been imprisoned for weeks in the city’s surrounding area have been allowed to depart, albeit considerably fewer than had been hoped.
According to a research group, Russia has not made any big achievements in eastern Ukraine, where conflict continues along a 300-mile front.
