Americans will receive guaranteed income of $24,000 over two-year period

A $1,000-per-month Universal Basic Income (UBI) programme is set to be launched for Americans.

According to a message posted by Mayor Brandon Scott’s office, the payments will be distributed to 200 low-income residents of Baltimore, Maryland.

Select people receive recurring payments under UBI, usually for a limited time.

Baltimore, for example, will provide eligible residents with $1,000 per month for 24 months.

The city is collaborating with the local nonprofit organisation CASH Campaign of Maryland on the guaranteed income programme, which assists low-income Americans.

The plan was first announced by Mayor Brandon Scott in February 2021.

Who is eligible?

Residents with low income will be able to apply for the payments beginning May 2.

The following are the complete eligibility requirements:
  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 24.
  • Be biological or adoptive parents, or guardians.
  • Parents must be fully or partially responsible for their children’s care.
  • Income must be at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty line, which is calculated based on household size.
  • The income level for a family of four is $83,250.

What other places provide UBI?

Baltimore isn’t the only city in the country that offers UBI; many others have also launched their own programmes.

For example, Ann Arbor, Michigan, recently approved a UBI programme that will send $500 monthly payments to 100 low-income families for three years.

On April 25, 5,000 Chicago residents will be able to apply for $500 monthly payments for a year.

In addition, Austin, Texas, is preparing to launch a $1,000 monthly income programme for 85 residents.

In addition, a bill was proposed in California that would provide $500 per month to approximately 15,000 high school seniors who are homeless.
