‘Facing our last days’: Mariupol leader appeals for aid

Maj. Serhiy Volyna claimed there were approximately 500 wounded troops and a large number of civilians at the Azovstal steel complex, which has become Ukrainians’ last stand in the coastal city.

According to the commander of the last Ukrainian troops defending the besieged city of Mariupol, his forces are outnumbered and may have only hours to live.

Maj. Serhiy Volyna claimed there were approximately 500 wounded military and numerous civilians inside the Azovstal steel complex, which has become the last line of defense for Ukrainians in the coastal city as Russia advances.

His 36th Marine Brigade, combined with fighters from the country’s Azov Regiment, a far-right volunteer force widely regarded as one of the country’s most capable troops, is holed up in the factory.

Volyn described the fighters’ grave predicament and appealed to global authorities for assistance in transporting them to safety

“We are probably facing our last days, if not hours,” he said.

Volyn also included the names of former Vice President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the tweet.

“We appeal and plead to all world leaders to help us. We ask them to use the procedure of extraction and take us to the territory of a third-party state,” he said.

Mariupol, a strategically vital city in southern Ukraine bordering the Azov Sea and located around 35 miles from the Russian border, has been the target of Russian bombardment since mid-March. Capturing it would provide a substantial boost to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offensive in the Donbas region.

According to Ukrainian officials, tens of thousands of people have died in the city, which has been without food, heat, and medication for weeks, while some have managed to evacuate.
