Russia-Ukraine conflict: The situation in Mariupol is ‘severe,’ while the West races to deliver weaponry

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said attacks in his country’s east had intensified dramatically as a result of the invading Russian soldiers forcing the war into a critical new phase.

On Wednesday, Russia pressed for an early triumph in its new eastern operation, forcing the remaining pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the beleaguered port city of Mariupol to surrender as its soldiers advanced into the Donbas industrial heartland.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said strikes in the east had intensified dramatically, and the situation in Mariupol was “very terrible,” as the war entered a critical new phase.

He called for no delays in the delivery of heavy weaponry, which Kyiv has stated might determine the outcome of the Donbas fight – a request that appears to be granted by his partners.

According to various officials, the US is set to announce another package of military help, while other Western nations have rushed to build up Ukraine’s defences in preparation for a conflict that will look considerably different from the war’s first two months.
