US spring snowstorm

US spring snowstorm

A spring blizzard has knocked out electricity throughout many states in the north-eastern United States, with some areas receiving more than a foot of snow.

Around 300,000 consumers lost power, including 200,000 in New York state.

Residents as far south as Virginia were welcomed with cold blasts instead of spring.

The National Weather Service issued snow storm warnings for many more northeastern states (NWS).

Heavy, wet snow was expected to pull down tree branches, with the NWS warning of wind gusts up to 40mph (64km/h).

Officials in New York advised residents to avoid the roadways whenever possible.

Binghamton, New York, established an April two-day snowfall record with 14.5in (36.8cm) of snow as of Tuesday morning.

The town of Virgil, New York, received 18 inches of snow, above the forecasted amount. Albany, New York’s state capital, recently saw a phenomena known as thundersnow.
Multiple automobile accidents occurred in Pennsylvania as a result of the snowfall, which reached up to 8in in some areas. Parts of West Virginia and Maryland received roughly 6in of snow, resulting in significant traffic on the region’s roadways.

Coastal cities such as Boston and New York City escaped unscathed, but were hit by torrential rain, floods, and severe wind gusts.
