Prosecutors in Egypt charged a man with murdering a Coptic Christian priest in an act that horrified the Arab World’s most populous country.
The public prosecutor stated in a statement that the man was charged with murdering the priest earlier this month on Alexandria’s popular beach promenade. Additionally, he was charged with illegal possession of a knife used in the attack, the report stated.
The trial has not been scheduled. If convicted, the suspect might face the death penalty.

In Egypt, sectarian violence is not uncommon. Islamic radicals have also attacked Christians in recent years, particularly in the aftermath of the 2013 military coup that deposed an Islamist but elected president after widespread demonstrations against his divisive leadership.
In September 2017, in Cairo, an 82-year-old Christian doctor was stabbed to death by an accused Daesh follower. The next year, he was sentenced to death.
Egypt’s Copts, the biggest Christian population in the Middle East, have consistently complained about discrimination. They make up around 10% of Egypt’s population of approximately 103 million.
