Amber Heard’s former personal assistant claims she never witnessed the actress being physically abused by her then-husband, Johnny Depp, but claims Heard once spit in her face when she requested for a raise.
Kate James said in a video deposition aired in court Thursday during the trial for Depp’s libel action against Heard that Heard plunged into screaming fits of blind wrath, sent nonsensical text messages at 4 a.m., and was frequently intoxicated and high on illegal drugs.
Depp, on the other hand, was quiet and shy, acting “like a total Southern gentleman,” according to James.

In a 2018 opinion post for The Washington Post, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor accused Heard of indirectly defaming him. In the essay, Heard describes herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Depp isn’t mentioned in the article. However, his lawyers contend that it plainly refers to a restraining order that Heard requested in May 2016, shortly after Depp informed her that he wanted a divorce.
Depp denies abusing Heard, but his lawyers claim that proof will show otherwise. They believe that the actor’s denials are untrustworthy since he routinely drank and used drugs to the point of blacking out and forgetting what he did.
James’ video testimony painted an opposing picture: Depp was the calm one, while Heard was routinely inebriated and verbally nasty, especially to her mother and sister.
“Her poor sister was basically treated like a dog you booted,” James claimed.
From 2012 until 2015, James worked for Heard and says she was paid “extremely little.” She claimed she was employed for a $25-an-hour starting pay and that her responsibilities included anything from picking up Heard’s dry washing to speaking with the actress’s Hollywood agents.
James was also charged with collecting two copies of any magazine featuring Heard and hiding them in the garage to keep Depp from seeing them, according to James. When James failed to put the magazines in the garage, Heard flew into a “blind rage,” according to James.
James described Heard as a “very emotional person” who was profoundly insecure in the relationship during their time together. She claimed she overheard James crying and complaining about Depp on a regular basis.
“I recall her calling me one time when she was alone in New York City, crying and wandering the streets, “James said his opinion. She claimed she told Heard to enter: “I was concerned that the paparazzi might photograph me.
Depp’s deposition focused in part on a text message he sent to James after he and Heard broke up. “Come over for a touch of purple and we’ll repair her flabby ass nice and good,” Depp texted.
A lawyer inquired as to whether “spot of purple” meant wine and “her” meant Heard. James stated that she does not wish to guess.
“This is how he writes,” James stated of Depp’s writing style. “It’s completely random, and you don’t question it.” He expresses himself in a very abstract manner.”
A video deposition of Laurel Anderson, a couple’s therapist who worked with Heard and Depp in 2015, when they were 29 and 52 years old, was also shown.
Both children, according to Anderson, were abused as children. They had a history of “mutual abuse” as a pair “She gave evidence in court.
“It was a source of pride for her if she felt mistreated to instigate a fight,” Anderson said, adding that Heard’s father beat her.
Heard would also rather fight Depp than see him leave, according to Anderson, and “would strike him to keep him there.”
Heard once informed the therapist that Depp was “‘stepping up,’ as she would put it, on a lot of narcotics,” according to the therapist.”
“And she hit him,” Anderson explained, “because he was being nonsensical and talking about being with another woman.” Depp’s mother was hospitalized at the time, she said.
Depp allegedly told Anderson that Heard “gave as good as she got.” She also said that during one of the sessions in which she met Heard alone, she was told by the actress that Depp had hit her. Heard, she claimed, had shown her bruises in photos and in person.
According to Anderson, “No one likes you,” Depp allegedly said at one point, according to Heard. You’re going to be famous because of me. I’m starting to lose interest in you. “You’re a whore,” says the narrator.
Heard’s “jackhammer manner of talking” and tendency of cutting off Depp, according to Anderson, overwhelmed him.
Heard “wanted to divorce” but didn’t, and was still deciding what to do, according to Anderson. “She was smitten by him. He was smitten by her. She wasn’t a moron. She was well aware that what they were doing wasn’t good for them.”
Both Depp and Heard, as well as actors Paul Bettany and James Franco and tech billionaire Elon Musk, are set to testify at the six-week trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court.
