The directors of the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest have revealed that Radu Lupu, one of the world’s best pianists, has died at the age of 76.

Maestro Radu Lupu, a good friend and a wonderful musician, passed away. We are extremely grieved to learn of his demise.

Lupu died in Lausanne, Switzerland, after a protracted illness, according to sources in the media.

An international piano competition named after Romanian composer George Enescu was established in his honour nine years before to Lupu’s victory, and he won it in 1967.

“We will always be grateful for his remarkable ability to turn music into something magical. For the loss of the entire music industry, there are no words that can adequately describe our grief “stated the festival.

When Lupu was six years old, he started playing the piano. He was born on November 30, 1945, in Galati, Romania.

Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow offered him the opportunity to study after getting accepted into Bucharest Conservatory.

On the other hand, Lupu earned the Van Cliburn Award (1966) and the Leeds Award (1969).

In Schumann, Brahms, Mozart, and Beethoven’s repertoire, Lupu was well recognised for his prudence and precision.

The Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim was where he made his US debut in 1971, and he has since worked with several of the world’s most esteemed conductors, including Herbert von Karajan and Carlo Mario Giulini.

The pianist was known for not giving interviews and for avoiding working in recording studios, despite his Grammy-winning 1996 performance of Schubert piano sonatas earning him a nod for his aversion to the studio in the 1990s.

As a result of his deteriorating health, Lupu, who now calls Switzerland home, stepped down from performing at the conclusion of the 2018/2019 season.

Musicians from across the world have paid tribute to Lupu on Twitter, with one describing him as “one of the best, warmest, most profound musicians I’ve ever heard, but also a truly kind, sensitive, humble and amusing man—and a fantastic friend”.
