2 men dead, 2 in critical condition boat sinks Connecticut coast

Officials say two men were dead and two others are in critical condition after their boat capsized in stormy waters off the coast of Connecticut early Sunday.

According to fire officials, at least seven agencies responded to a report of a small boat in distress on the Long Island Sound, including the Coast Guard, Stamford firefighters, and Stamford Police.

According to the Stamford Fire Department, the 12-foot boat was unable to return to shore owing to heavy gusts and rough seas.

“The boat was being carried by the tide and wind away from Stamford when the last cell phone call was made to a family member from one of those on board the small vessel,” the statement said.

First responders had problems finding the boat at first because of a language barrier and contradicting reports of the boat’s last known location, according to the report.

Firefighters at the Stamford Emergency Communication Center were eventually able to track the boat using software by utilizing the caller’s cell phone number.

The four men were then rescued from the 3-4 foot seas by emergency responders who discovered pieces of the boat.

Two of the men were unresponsive and unconscious. According to fire officials, the other two were just semi-responsive. All four were transferred to hospitals in the area.

The first two men were pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other two were in critical condition, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The men’s identities have not been revealed.

According to the department, all four males were wearing life jackets. The incident is currently being investigated.
