JUI-F to get post of NA deputy speaker

The joint opposition has decided to give the post of deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA) to JUI-F, Bol News reported on Monday.

The party has nominated Zahid Akram Durrani for the office of the deputy speaker, and he has also received the nomination papers.

The seat had fallen vacant after Qasim Suri had resigned from the post following the en masse resignations of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers after the ouster of Imran Khan as prime minister through a no-confidence vote.

Bol News reported that Durrani would submit the nomination papers tomorrow.

Earlier, sources had reported that four candidates of different political parties were in the race. Shaza Fatima and Ali Pervaiz from PML-N, Shahida Akhtar from JUI-F and Agha Baloch from BNP-Mengal were willing to become the deputy speaker.

However, the coalition government wanted to develop a consensus on a single candidate for an unopposed election.

Sources said PML-N wanted to retain the office as PPP was given the speakership of the lower house. However, the coalition government has agreed upon Durrani’s name.
