On Saturday, Errol Spence pummelling Yordenis Ugas on route to a tenth-round technical knockout, adding the Cuban’s World Boxing Association title to his World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation straps.
Spence remained undefeated, improving to 28-0 with 22 knockouts, when referee Laurence Cole stopped the bout at 1:44 of the tenth round on the suggestion of the ringside doctor.
By then, Ugas’s right eye had swelled shut from Spence’s strikes, who rocked the Cuban in the seventh round and proceeded to pound him till the bout ended.
Spence was competing for the first time since an eye injury sustained during preparation caused him to withdraw from an August contest with Manny Pacquiao.
Ugas came in at the final minute and defeated the Filipino great in a unanimous decision.
However, the 35-year-old Cuban was helpless against Spence’s lethal combinations. He did shock the American in the sixth round, sending him flying against the ropes after Spence became distracted by his mouthpiece’s loss.
“I believed the referee had signalled a halt,” Spence said. “That is all my fault.”
Spence, who maintained he was never knocked down, was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards when the fight was halted, ending Ugas’s undefeated streak at 27-5 with 12 knockouts.
