Have Your Say: MP blasts EU red tape for “continued impediment” to Britain – or is it?

BRITAIN voted in 2016 to leave Brussels’ bureaucracy behind, but it appears as though the UK is still being held down by red tape.

Sammy Wilson of the Democratic Unionist Party says that certain provisions of the UK’s withdrawal agreement from the EU – particularly the Northern Ireland Protocol – mean we are still ensnared in the bloc’s clutches.

He told Express.co.uk that the Tories had “committed themselves to take VAT off energy bills once we left the EU”, as the Prime Minister had previously made it clear they couldn’t cut VAT because “we’re part of the EU and EU laws on VAT don’t allow us to do it.”

However, Mr. Wilson asserted that the procedure has now rendered Chancellor Rishi Sunak incapable of adequately addressing the country’s spiraling cost of living crisis.

The Northern Irish MP said: “When they considered that for the whole United Kingdom, they found they couldn’t apply it to Northern Ireland because we are still under the VAT regime. So it was dropped for the whole United Kingdom.”

He noted that a review was necessary to ensure the UK’s “Brexit freedoms” were maximized. However, do you believe that EU red tape is still impeding Britain’s progress?
