Elon Musk’s offer to buy Twitter is about ‘the future of civilization’

Elon Musk’s offer to buy Twitter is about ‘the future of civilization’

Elon Musk defended his offer to purchase Twitter on Thursday.

He said that the accession is nothing less than a turning point for civilization, during an on-stage interview at TED conference.

Musk proposed the deal in order to retain the democracy of a trusted platform. The deal wasn’t about the economics of Twitter business.

Musk told Chris Anderson, “This is not a way to make money. My strong intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization.”

Elon railed against lack of free speech on Twitter. The operations should increase its transparency in the company’s content moderation decisions, according to him.

He said, “The code should be on Github so people can look through it and say, ‘I see a problem here,’ ‘I don’t agree with this,’ they can highlight issues, suggest changes.”

He was asked regarding making changes in content moderation, to which he replied, “Is someone you don’t like allowed to say something you don’t like? And if that is the case, then we have free speech.”

He explained the principles of free speech.

He said that if a tweet is considered controversial, it shouldn’t be promoted. They should be reluctant to delete things and permanent bans should be treated cautiously.

He knew that there will be errors even if he owns the company.

“I think everyone will still blame me for everything,” he said. “If I acquire Twitter and something goes wrong, it’s my fault, 100%. I think there will be quite a few errors.”

He was asked if he had a backup plan, if he loses the deal. He said he had various ideas.

He was diffident to elaborate.
