Kyiv: A day after Russian forces blasted a missile unit outside of Kyiv, an AFP correspondent reports that early Saturday morning, attacks hit a military hardware factory in the Ukrainian capital.
After Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on social media that there had been explosions in the capital’s Darnyrsky district, smoke erupted from the region and there was a large police and military presence.
At least one facility at a Kyiv arms industry was targeted by Moscow’s forces, according to Russia’s defence ministry.
Earlier this month, invading Russian soldiers stopped evacuating from areas near Kyiv and instead focused on capturing control of the eastern Donbas region, prompting this next attack on Ukraine’s capital city.
As a result of the midnight strikes, Russian forces targeted the Vizar complex, which is located near the capital’s international airport. The overnight bombings severely damaged the missile production facility.
In a statement, Russia claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming that it was carried out with sea-based long-range missiles.
According to Klitschko, authorities are still trying to determine whether anyone was killed or injured in the incident.
At the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February, residential districts of Kyiv were regularly hit. In a statement, the Kremlin said that it has no plans to target civilian infrastructure.
