Skier caught in crevasse is saved by an iPhone secret feature

A snowboarder from New Zealand has revealed his dramatic rescue after falling through a five-meter crevasse and signaling for aid using a little-known iPhone trick.

Tim Blakey was snowboarding alone in Switzerland when he crashed through a hole in the ice, with no witnesses to his demise.

He declared on Instagram that he would never again snowboard solo.

“No matter how experienced you think you are, it is no joke,” he wrote.

“I was lured into a false sense of security which also led me to be very blasé about researching the areas I snowboard.”

Mr. Blakey’s iPhone was at 3% battery life and had very poor reception.

However, he was able to signal for assistance using the five-click approach for the side button.

On current iPhones, a user can send an emergency SOS by pressing the side button five times.

When engaged, the iPhone automatically initiates an emergency call, notifies your emergency contacts, and transmits the user’s position.

“It very likely saved my life,” Mr. Blakey said.

“Eight out of ten people I tell this story to aren’t aware it exists.”

Swiss Rescue tracked him down and rescued him as a result of the emergency warning.

“The alternative to this has been keeping me up at night, to say the least.” According to Mr. Blakey.

“To walk /hobble away from this relatively unharmed & make my flight back to London that evening is quite the headf—.”

Mr. Blakey shared a photo of himself alongside one of the soldiers who rescued him.
