Gina McCarthy, the White House’s climate adviser, is planning to resign

According to two sources, White House climate adviser Gina McCarthy is going to resign, bringing an end to a term marked by aggressive emissions targets but a failure to secure major US carbon-cutting legislation.

McCarthy, 67, had planned to stay in the White House for nearly a year, expecting to assist government agencies in implementing President Joe Biden’s ambitious climate legislation, but his efforts faltered due to Democratic senators’ internal opposition.

McCarthy has already postponed her departure, telling Reuters that she will leave as early as next month.

“This is not true, and there are no such plans happening, and no personnel announcements to make,” said by White House spokesman Vedant Patel.

In an email, he said, “Gina and her entire staff remain laser focused on delivering on President Biden’s clean energy programme.”

McCarthy, a former EPA administrator under the Obama administration, was appointed by Biden to a new position in the White House overseeing domestic climate policy coordination.

Biden campaigned on a promise to wean the country off fossil fuels, but now finds himself looking for ways to boost global supply of oil and other carbon-rich energy products in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and high gas prices that advisers see damaging his standing with voters.
