Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that commercial truck travel from the Mexican state of Chihuahua to Texas will resume as soon as both sides reach an agreement on border security.
Abbott stated during a joint press conference with Chihuahua Governor Maria Eugenia Campos Galvan that the state of Chihuahua proposed a plan that will allow Texas authorities to end increased inspections that have caused truck bottlenecks in Chihuahua over the past week.
“Texas and Chihuahua have now agreed to safeguard the border while also allowing commercial trucks to pass through the ports,” Abbott stated.
According to Abbott, the checks were part of a larger attempt to dissuade illegal immigration in response to Democratic President Joe Biden’s “open borders” policies.
Abbott and Coahuila Governor Miguel Angel Riquelme Solis signed an agreement in which both states agreed to work together to minimise illegal immigration and verify that vehicles crossing the border fulfil safety standards.
Mexican truck drivers protested the delays by blocking bridges at the US-Mexico border earlier this week. Some drivers stated the delays lasted more than half a day.
