KARACHI: Iqra Extension (IUx) and Fordham University, based in New York, USA, signed an MoU to provide students with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree. The agreement sees IUx offer Pakistani students the chance to obtain an LLM, a postgraduate degree designed to enhance academic legal knowledge. This is the first time an American accredited LLM degree is offered in Pakistan.
According to US News, Fordham University is ranked No. 37 (tie) in Best Law Schools and No. 3 in Part-time Law. Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence.
Associate Vice-President of Fordham, Ellen Fahey Smith, and IUx’s Chairman and Founding Chancellor, Hunaid Lakhani, signed the MoU. As per the memorandum, both parties will collaborate in encouraging visits by faculty and students from one University to the other to engage in research and education. It also promises to facilitate the admission of qualified students from one University to the other to enrol in undergraduate and graduate programs and participate in research in the case of advanced graduate students.
Hunaid Lakhani said that the collaboration is a stepping-stone for graduate students to pursue a legal career in the US.
“Many Pakistani students want to study law, but in the American system. Academia in Pakistan has for too long focused solely on British legal qualifications. We want to change that. By offering this qualification in conjunction with Fordham University, we offer students the chance to obtain an advanced degree in American law that can provide an excellent opportunity to obtain employment prospects for future lawyers in the American system.” said Mr Lakhanii.
