On Thursday, the man accused of wounding 23 people by detonating smoke bombs and spraying gunshots inside a New York City subway car was scheduled to appear in court for the first time to face a federal charge of violently attacking a mass transit system.
Frank Robert James, 62, was apprehended in lower Manhattan on Wednesday, concluding a 30-hour manhunt for the lone suspect in an attack that alarmed commuters of the country’s largest and busiest rapid transit system and revived calls for increased subway security.
James was apprehended around 8 miles (13 kilometres) from the scene of the assault on Tuesday, which occurred during morning rush hour as a Manhattan-bound N-line train pulled into an underground station in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.
Street station, police said 10 people were shot, five of them were hospitalized in critical but stable condition, and 13 others were hurt. All of them were anticipated to make it.
